PROGRAM

“Tea for Harmony: East Meets West in Music” is a cultural event to be held on April 24. The program will begin at 5:30 PM with immersive demonstrations and interactive experiences of tea ceremony, incense appreciation, and flower arrangement, offering guests a multidimensional introduction to the elegance and depth of Chinese tea culture.

The concert will commence at 7:00 PM, featuring performances by a guqin (Chinese zither) player, cellist, morin khuur (horsehead fiddle) player, dizi (Chinese bamboo flute) player, vocalist, and percussionist. The program will present a rich and engaging repertoire that bridges Chinese and Western musical traditions. A buffet reception will follow the performance.

This event marks the fourth consecutive year that the Chinese Embassy has hosted a program centered on Chinese tea culture. With a special focus on the guqin, this year’s event highlights both the refined aesthetics of traditional Chinese music and a vibrant dialogue between Eastern and Western artistic expressions. The expanded experiential segment—including tea, incense, and floral arts—invites guests to more fully appreciate the spirit, beauty, and cultural significance embodied in Chinese tea culture.

This amazing evening will have a beautiful tea service beginning at 5:30PM in the magnificent Embassy of China in the United States.  Samples of this exotic tea from China, interspersed with pastry and music played on Chinese instruments and violin and cello.

This 2-part special program concert event begins at 5:30PM with a unique, formal tea ceremony featuring China’s most experienced and respected tea Masters who have travelled to the United States exclusively for this ceremony. Experience a once-in-a lifetime traditional Chinese tea ceremony, often referred to as Gongfu Cha ("making tea with skill"), as a multisensory ritual emphasizing mindfulness, respect, and harmony with nature. Elevated with incense parties, exotic teas, and a tea master, this ceremony becomes a deep aesthetic and spiritual experience. Enchanting music, played on both Chinese and American instruments will also be played throughout the environs of the Embassy at special spots along a tour prior to the formal concert program.

At 7:00PM the musical festivities follow with a very special series of musicians from China and the United States.  The Chinese government has sent over many fine artists and they will play Chinese music with many Chinese indigenous instruments. The Embassy Series has provided two virtuosic instrumentalists, cello and violin players to play during this program to symbolize the connection with the Chinese people to bring people closer to each other.

This is a rare evening and will be a wonderful adventure followed by a lovely buffet dinner of Chinese delicious cuisine, prepared by the embassy chef.

The Living Art of Chinese Tea Culture

China, the birthplace of tea and tea culture, has embraced tea for over 7,000 years, ever since its legendary discovery by Emperor Shen Nong.  According to ancient lore, Shen Nong was tasting hundreds of herbs to study their properties when he discovered that tea could help detoxify the body. What began as a medicinal discovery gradually evolved into a powerful symbol of balance, wellness, and cultural identity. Over millennia, Chinese ancestors refined the arts of tea cultivation, processing, brewing, and ceremony—laying the foundation for the rich traditions that shaped the Chinese tea ceremony. Rooted in calm, reflection, and connection, the ceremony has developed into a mindful practice that continues to inspire tea cultures worldwide. More than a tradition, it is a living art that bridges ancient wisdom with modern wellness. Today, China’s six major tea categories are recognized as international standards (ISO), reflecting the global influence of its tea heritage. Whether shared with others, practiced in quiet meditation, or simply enjoyed as a peaceful pause in the day, tea continues to bring harmony, mindfulness, and meaning into our lives.
