Jacques-Pierre Milan, cello; Vadim Tchijik, violin
Jacques-Pierre Malan is an internationally acclaimed cellist, praised for his “vibrant musicality” and described as a “tour de force” (Beeld). He has performed extensively across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the United States.
Malan currently serves as Cellist-in-Residence and Artistic Director of the historic Embassy Series in Washington, D.C., where he collaborates with embassies as a soloist, chamber musician, and producer. His work with the Series centers on concert programs that explore humanitarian and diplomatic themes. He is also the founder of the Embassy Series String Quartet (embassystringquartet.com) and a core member of the Serafin Ensemble (serafinensemble.org), based in Wilmington, Delaware.
While chamber music is his artistic cornerstone, Malan has also appeared widely as a concerto soloist, performing with the Mid-Atlantic Symphony, KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic, Johannesburg Philharmonic, Cape Town Philharmonic, and the Peabody Symphony Orchestra. His accolades include awards from the Yale Gordon Foundation (Baltimore), the South African Music Rights Organization (SAMRO), and the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival (SICMF). He was also featured in the acclaimed documentary Getting to Carnegie Hall.
Malan is currently on the roster of International Music Exchange Concerts, appearing regularly as both soloist and chamber musician at festivals and concert halls across Japan, Italy, Germany, South Africa, and the United States. He tours Japan annually, performing in over 20 cities at major venues such as Kyoto Concert Hall, Harmony Hall Fukui, and JMS Aster Plaza.
His latest artistic endeavor is a bold, personal project: performing all 12 Caprices by Alfredo Piatti in diverse concert settings, accompanied by talks titled “Overcoming Personal Obstacles Through Impossible Projects.”
Beyond performance, Malan teaches at the Nelly Berman School of Music in Philadelphia, maintains a private studio in Baltimore, and regularly gives masterclasses and adjudicates competitions in both the U.S. and South Africa. His academic background includes a Master’s Degree and Graduate Performance Diploma from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University, where he studied with Amit Peled, and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Pretoria.

He performs in various radio and TV broadcasts in many countries (France Musique, Radio Classique, NHK, France 3, Mezzo, RAI, Japanese, Russian, Swedish television) and his concerts were broadcasted all over the Europe, USA and Asia. He recorded several CD’s for Lyrinx (“Recommandé” by Classica Magazine, “Coup de Coeur” by Piano Magazine), Exton (“One of the best CD’s of the Month” by The Record Geijutsu (Japan), Polymnie, NovAntiqua and IBS Classical labels. In 2006 he participates in Japan at the recording of a series of CD dedicated to the 250th Mozart Anniversary. His concerts always receive highest acclamations by critics.
He played chamber music with Pieter Wispelwey, Emmanuel Pahud, Jean-Claude Pennetier, Anne Queffélec, David Geringas, Marielle Nordmann, Philippe Bernold, Cedric Tiberghien, Marc Coppey, Lawrence Power, Michel Arrignon, Alexander Melnikov, Alban Gerhardt, Thierry Caens, Yves Henry, Dominique De Williencourt, Michel Lethiec, Alain Meunier, François Salque, Bernard Soustrot etc.
Born in November 1975, he started to study the violin at the age of six and gave his first concert when he was only eight. He finished the famous Tchaikovsky Central Music School in Moscow, National Superior Conservatory of Music in Lyon, High Conservatory of Music in Cologne, and always obtained the highest honours.Among his teachers were Boris Belkin, Ivry Gitlis, Edouard Schmieder, Herman Krebbers, Mihaela Martin and Irina Botchkova.
Vadim Tchijik is Professor at Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris and gives master-classes in Europe, in South America and in Asia. He also edited the violin part of music by Saint-Saëns, Ravel and Franck for “Zen On” music edition in Japan.
He is also an Artistic Director of the International Music Festival in Hyeres, “Les Musicales de Sartrouville” and “Les Heures Musicales de Binic et de la Baie” Music Festivals and a founder and director of ensemble “Les Virtuoses”
In 2004, the French magazine “Diapason” dedicates one page to Vadim Tchijik entitled “Already Maestro” and in 2010, he is on the cover of the famous magazine “String” with an exclusive interview of six pages.
He is playing a F. Gagliano violin made in Naples in 1775.
